An adaptive reuse turned luxury hotel enclave, The Foundry Hotel opened in 2018 as part of the Hilton Curio Collection. Once home to the original Asheville Foundry & Supply Company—the steelworks behind many of the city's landmarks, including the famed Biltmore Estate—the restored property and new brand celebrate the craftsmanship that defined the Industrial Revolution and America's Gilded Age.

BREAKING DOWN THE BRAND
THE VISION
To forge a visual identity that embodied the spirit of hard work, refinement, and timeless craftsmanship. The goal was to merge the property's industrial legacy with the sophistication of modern luxury—crafting a brand that feels both enduring and elevated, rich in history yet distinctly contemporary. It stands as a testament to the artistry of labor and the beauty of reinvention, inviting a new generation of travelers to experience history reimagined.
TYPOGRAPHY
The identity's foundation was built on three typefaces, each chosen for its sense of heritage and purpose. Raleway, an elegant sans serif, provides architectural precision and balanced craftsmanship. AE Armada, reserved for numeric details, lends a rugged strength reminiscent of steelworks and vintage industrial signage. Martin Gothic Bold serves as a visual anchor for headlines and wayfinding, its bold simplicity echoing the hotel’s industrial past.
VISUAL IDENTITY
Inspired by symbols of the Industrial Revolution, The Foundry brand brings to life its tagline, “Hand Crafted. Hard Earned.” A custom pattern of anvils, axes, and pliers set within a structured steel framework pays homage to the tools and tenacity of the site's original craftsmen. To reflect the duality of the era, elegant editorial photography is juxtaposed with the grit of labor. Historic invoices and timecards inspired collateral layouts, while a magnified fingerprint motif appears across materials—doubling as both the artisan’s mark and a tactile leather texture. Among the most distinctive features are custom playing card-style RFID keys, each depicting one of America’s five "robber barons": Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan and John Jacob Astor. Finally, the signage design reinforces authenticity through steel, metal, and patina, grounding the brand in its material origins.

CELEBRATING SUCCESSION
The Foundry Hotel stands as a triumph of preservation and reinvention, earning top accolades including Curio Development of the Year, the Griffin Award for Adaptive Reuse, and recognition as the #2 Hotel in the South and #30 in the World by Condé Nast Traveler. Today, The Foundry is an adaptive reuse industry benchmark–and proof that when history is handled with intention, it becomes timeless.
